Gender Accountability and Family week launched in Northern Province

Gicumbi 22th September 2026, Gender Monitoring Office in collaboration with Western Province and Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion has on launched Gender and Family Week in all districts of Northern Province. At the Provincial level, the event took place in Gicumbi district, in the Byumba Sector in the Special community dialogue " Inteko y'abaturage."

This launch attender with the Governor of Northern Province Mr Mugabowagahunde Maurice, Minister of Gender and Family Promotion UWIMANA Consolee, Chief Gender Monitor Ms. Umutoni Gatsinzi Nadine, Mayor of Gicumbi district Mr. Nzabonimpa Emmanuel, security organs, Partners, and the host community.
In her remarks, Chief Gender Monitor Ms. Umutoni Gatsinzi Nadine said "Promoting gender equality start to our home, Gicumbi district should be the lead in promoting gender equality between women and men and build a resilient family "

 37 couples Legally Married
During the event, 37 couples who had previously been living together without being legally married were officially united in marriage, after choosing to formalize their unions in accordance with the law.

During this month in all districts of the Northern Province, different activities will be conducted including child registration, Marriage legalization, gender dialogues with, Dialogue on the Role of youths in promoting Gender Equality and Fighting Gender-Based Violence and building strong families, Training on gender-responsive budgeting and budget planning that integrates gender equality principles (GBS) and GBV Clinics.

In her closing remarks, the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Uwimana Consolée, commended the couples who had taken the decision to formalize their unions in accordance with the law.

She reminded citizens that a strong and safe family is one free from all forms of violence, and called on citizens to play an active role in preventing Gender - Based violence and reporting cases or signs of violence whenever they occur.
