Mutete, Gicumbi District – June 26, 2026

The leadership and staff of the Gender Monitoring Office (GMO) and ASSETIP joined Rwandans in commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The commemoration was held at the Mutete Genocide Memorial in Mutete Sector, Gicumbi District, where the remains of more than 1,096 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi are laid to rest.

The event began with a wreath-laying ceremony and a moment of silence in honor of the victims buried at the memorial. Participants were then taken through the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi, particularly the tragic journey endured by those whose remains are preserved at the Mutete Memorial. They were reminded of the importance of preserving the truth about Rwanda's history and passing it on to younger generations to ensure that such atrocities are never repeated.

Speaking during the commemoration, the Chief Gender Monitor, Ms. Umutoni Gatsinzi Nadine, emphasized that remembrance is a shared national responsibility that enables Rwandans to reflect on their history, learn from it, and strengthen their commitment to building a peaceful and united nation.

"Commemoration gives us the opportunity to reflect on our history and learn from it. We must continue building a country founded on unity, peace, and sustainable development while standing firmly against genocide ideology, denial, and trivialization of the Genocide against the Tutsi," she said.
As part of the commemoration, the Chief Gender Monitor, together with the Director General of ASSETIP, Gilbert Kalimba, presented a financial contribution to the management of the Mutete Genocide Memorial to support the preservation of the memorial site. They also laid wreaths at the mass graves, paid tribute to the victims, and conveyed messages of solidarity and continued support to genocide survivors and bereaved families.

GMO and ASSETIP provided support to the Mutete Genocide Memorial as part of their  commitment to preserving the memory of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, promoting unity, and honoring the resilience of survivors.

In line with their commitment to improving the livelihoods of survivors, GMO and ASSETIP donated four cows to four genocide survivor families. The support is intended to enhance household incomes, improve food security, and promote sustainable socio-economic development for the beneficiary families.
The initiative reflects the shared commitment of GMO and ASSETIP to preserving the memory of the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi, honoring those who lost their lives, and supporting survivors as Rwanda continues to strengthen unity, reconciliation, and sustainable development.

Four  families of Genocide survivors received cows and food support to strengthen their livelihoods, improve household nutrition, and promote long-term resilience.

The commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi remains a solemn occasion to honor innocent lives lost, comfort survivors, and renew the collective commitment to combating genocide ideology and ensuring that "Never Again" remains a lived reality for future generations.
