The Gender Monitoring Office in partnership with Ngororero District is set to conduct the Gender Accountability Day from 17-23 November 2018, the event which aims to further improve institutional accountability to gender equality and Gender Based Violence (GBV) service delivery and raise awareness on gender accountability and GBV prevention and response.

The one-week event will run under the theme ‘Building a Rwanda We Want, Promoting Gender Equality and fighting Child Defilement.’

The Gender Accountability Day (GAD) event has been initiated in 2017 by GMO as a strategic platform to ensure that gender dividends are sustained and that gender accountability is institutionalized to accelerate the gender agenda for inclusive sustainable development in Rwanda, right from the decentralized level. So far two GAD events have been conducted in Rulindo and Nyagatare Districts.

Activities

During the GAD event in Ngororero District, a series of activities will be carried out with active involvement of different stakeholders. These include a special community work/Umuganda, community Dialogue on gender and GBV, workshop with teen mothers, civil registration for unregistered children, legalization of illegal Marriages as well as exhibition of District stakeholders’ registered achievements in promoting gender equality and fighting GBV in the community.

The GAD event normally attracts different stakeholders including public, private, and Civil Society Organizations. Apart from local residents, the event is also attended by different high Government officials including Ministers and Members of the Parliament. 

Previous GAD’s achievements

As a contribution to enhancing social cohesion and protection of Family member’s rights and ensuring their responsibilities, more than 1,200 couples legalized their marriages in both Rulindo and Nyagatare Districts.

In a bid to promoting and protecting child rights and facilitating effective planning, more than 2,900 children from both districts of Rulindo and Nyagatare were registered in civil books.

Different vulnerable individuals and families were also supported in various ways including provision of health insurance cards, livestock, and sanitary facilities. On this note, 30 health insurance cards, 365 cows, 100 goats and 200 were donated in both Rulindo and Nyagatare Districts.

In the same spirit, six (6) secondary schools from two districts were supported with girls’ room equipment. In addition, stakeholders support towards teen mothers self-reliance, regaining dignity and overcoming the identified issues in terms of psychosocial, school reintegration, economic empowerment and legal assistance was mobilized.
